A Welcome

A warm welcome from the E-bookmuncher

E-bookmuncher has just one objective;

‘To help independent e-book authors gain the recognition and publicity they deserve for their work.’

How do we do that?

  • By selecting, buying and reading two e-books each month and then reviewing them.
  • By inviting independent e-book authors for an interview so that they can talk about their e-book, their writing methods and their aspirations.
  • By posting our reviews and interviews where others will see them.
  • By inviting comment and opinions.

E-book Reviews

Which e-books are we interested in?

E-books that meet all of the following criteria….

  • E-books which have been self-published, either by an independent author or by a publishing service for ‘Indie’ authors.  We are not interested in reviewing e-books published through traditional mainstream publishing houses.
  • E-books which are priced between $0.99 and $4.99  inclusive (or alternative currency equivalent). We want to help ‘Indie’ authors who place a value on their work, not those who give it away for free, however well intentioned. Put simply, we do not wish to encourage consumers to expect to get something as fantastic as your e-book for nothing after all your hard work! If you don’t value your work, who will?
  • E-books that are recommended to us by at least one other ‘Indie’ author as well as the author of the book in question. We want to encourage authors to help each other.

Lots of sites offer reviews, so why is this different?

E-bookmuncher aims to help the independent e-book author to assess their work by offering them a  points-based review as well as a commentary, covering several key aspects that contribute to the success of an e-book. These are as follows;

  • The Title – (maximum 2 points) -  ‘Shall I stop right here and take a closer look?’
  • The Cover Image – (maximum 3 points) – ‘Does it excite me enough to look at the blurb?’
  • The ‘Blurb’ or Short Description - (maximum 5 points) – ‘To buy or not to buy?’
  • The Content – (maximum 10 points) – ‘Would I recommend it?

The total score (maximum 20 points) will be converted to a star * rating familiar to all through Amazon, Smashwords and Goodreads, as follows;

  • 1-4 points = one star *
  • 5-8 points = two stars **
  • 9-12 points = three stars ***
  • 13-15 points = four stars ****
  • 16 points and over = five stars *****

Your review and star rating will be posted on Amazon, Smashwords and Goodreads, where possible.

The E-bookmuncher points-based review method is designed to give the independent author an impartial view of their work so that they can decide whether to canvass further opinion on a particular aspect of their ebook, make changes or completely ignore the review.

We can’t guarantee that you will like every aspect of your review, but we will always endeavour to be positive and contructive. It is, after all, only our opinion. If you only want guaranteed five star reviews, however, ask your friends to do them for you. What we aim to offer is a postive and contructive alternative to  the ‘automatic five star review’ which frankly helps no-one, least of all your paying customers – your richest source for recommendations.

Author Interviews

As well as conducting E-book reviews, E-bookmuncher will be delighted to interview two published  ‘Indie’ authors each month to help promote their work. To qualify, you must have a published E-book with a combined total of at least ten Amazon, Smashwords or Goodreads reviews. This is to encourage E-book authors already on their way to success to share best practice and tips with other authors.

If you would like E-bookmuncher to interview you, please send an email to:  interview@davidmakinson.com

  1. Hi David, Do you make a distinction between books that have/have not been edited? I read a lot of eBooks, but I won’t read those that have not been edited (to some degree, at least). Do you need help? Volunteer readers?

    • Hi JJ

      Thanks for your comment above. Whilst I don’t specifically ask for e-books that have been professionally edited, by asking for an endorsement of an e-book from another author or, ideally, an independent reader, I hope that the e-books I choose to review will have been edited as you put it ‘to some degree at least’. As the e-bookmuncher review works on a points basis, a shoddily prepared e-book is likely to see the lack of preparation and editing reflected in its mark.

      In terms of help, I would appreciate any reader / reviewer who has read any of the e-books I have reviewed to share their thoughts by adding their comments under the review of the relevant author or e-book. As time progresses, it would be good to expand the review process to a panel, with the review points awarded being a mean score from the participants.
